    Design Solutions For Modular Satellite Architectures

    The cost-effective access to space envisaged by ESA would open a wide range of new opportunities and markets, but is still many years ahead. There is still a lack of devices, circuits, systems which make possible to develop satellites, ground stations and related services at costs compatible with the budget of academic institutions and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). As soon as the development time and cost of small satellites will fall below a certain threshold (e.g. 100,000 to 500,000 €), appropriate business models will likely develop to ensure a cost-effective and pervasive access to space, and related infrastructures and services. These considerations spurred the activity described in this paper, which is aimed at: - proving the feasibility of low-cost satellites using COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) devices. This is a new trend in the space industry, which is not yet fully exploited due to the belief that COTS devices are not reliable enough for this kind of applications; - developing a flight model of a flexible and reliable nano-satellite with less than 25,000€; - training students in the field of avionics space systems: the design here described is developed by a team including undergraduate students working towards their graduation work. The educational aspects include the development of specific new university courses; - developing expertise in the field of low-cost avionic systems, both internally (university staff) and externally (graduated students will bring their expertise in their future work activity); - gather and cluster expertise and resources available inside the university around a common high-tech project; - creating a working group composed of both University and SMEs devoted to the application of commercially available technology to space environment. The first step in this direction was the development of a small low cost nano-satellite, started in the year 2004: the name of this project was PiCPoT (Piccolo Cubo del Politecnico di Torino, Small Cube of Politecnico di Torino). The project was carried out by some departments of the Politecnico, in particular Electronics and Aerospace. The main goal of the project was to evaluate the feasibility of using COTS components in a space project in order to greatly reduce costs; the design exploited internal subsystems modularity to allow reuse and further cost reduction for future missions. Starting from the PiCPoT experience, in 2006 we began a new project called ARaMiS (Speretta et al., 2007) which is the Italian acronym for Modular Architecture for Satellites. This work describes how the architecture of the ARaMiS satellite has been obtained from the lesson learned from our former experience. Moreover we describe satellite operations, giving some details of the major subsystems. This work is composed of two parts. The first one describes the design methodology, solutions and techniques that we used to develop the PiCPoT satellite; it gives an overview of its operations, with some details of the major subsystems. Details on the specifications can also be found in (Del Corso et al., 2007; Passerone et al, 2008). The second part, indeed exploits the experience achieved during the PiCPoT development and describes a proposal for a low-cost modular architecture for satellite

    An optimizing C front-end for hardware synthesis

    Modern embedded systems must execute a variety of high performance real-time tasks, such as audio and image compression and decompression, channel coding and encoding, etc. High hardware design and mask production costs dictate the need to re-use an architectural platform for as many applications as possible. Reconfigurable platforms can be very effective in these cases, because they allow one to re-use the architecture across a variety of applications. The efficient use of a reconfigurable platform requires a methodology and tools supporting it in order to extensively explore the hardware/software design space, without requiring developers to have a deep knowledge of the underlying architecture, since they often have a software background and only limited hardware design skills. This paper describes a tool that fits into a complete design flow for a reconfigurable processor and that allows one to efficiently transform a high level specification into a lower level one, more suitable for synthesis on the reconfigurable array.     Quasi-static scheduling of independent tasks for reactive systems

    The synthesis of a reactive system generates a set of concurrent tasks coordinated by an operating system. This paper presents a synthesis approach for reactive systems that aims at minimizing the overhead introduced by the operating system and the interaction among the concurrent tasks.     HW-Flow-Fusion: Inter-Layer Scheduling for Convolutional Neural Network Accelerators with Dataflow Architectures

    Energy and throughput efficient acceleration of convolutional neural networks (CNN) on devices with a strict power budget is achieved by leveraging different scheduling techniques to minimize data movement and maximize data reuse. Several dataflow mapping frameworks have been developed to explore the optimal scheduling of CNN layers on reconfigurable accelerators. However, previous works usually optimize each layer singularly, without leveraging the data reuse between the layers of CNNs. In this work, we present an analytical model to achieve efficient data reuse by searching for efficient scheduling of communication and computation across layers. We call this inter-layer scheduling framework HW-Flow-Fusion, as we explore the fused map-space of multiple layers sharing the available resources of the same accelerator, investigating the constraints and trade-offs of mapping the execution of multiple workloads with data dependencies. We propose a memory-efficient data reuse model, tiling, and resource partitioning strategies to fuse multiple layers without recomputation. Compared to standard single-layer scheduling, inter-layer scheduling can reduce the communication volume by 51% and 53% for selected VGG16-E and ResNet18 layers on a spatial array accelerator, and reduce the latency by 39% and 34% respectively, while also increasing the computation to communication ratio which improves the memory bandwidth efficiency

    Accelerating and pruning CNNs for semantic segmentation on FPGA

    Semantic segmentation is one of the popular tasks in computer vision, providing pixel-wise annotations for scene understanding. However, segmentation-based convolutional neural networks require tremendous computational power. In this work, a fully-pipelined hardware accelerator with support for dilated convolution is introduced, which cuts down the redundant zero multiplications. Furthermore, we propose a genetic algorithm based automated channel pruning technique to jointly optimize computational complexity and model accuracy. Finally, hardware heuristics and an accurate model of the custom accelerator design enable a hardware-aware pruning framework. We achieve 2.44X lower latency with minimal degradation in semantic prediction quality (−1.98 pp lower mean intersection over union) compared to the baseline DeepLabV3+ model, evaluated on an Arria-10 FPGA.
